Palisades Fire Smoke Remediation Window Treatments

As the dust settles, we are happy to be in a position to help victims of the Palisades and Alta Dena fires pick up the pieces, return to normalcy, and add some beauty back to their homes.

The soft and whispy aesthetic of our mill-direct sourced, Oeko Tex certified European linen compliments this elegant living room with plaster walls, vaulted ceilings and plenty of musical instruments for entertaining family and friends.

Beauty Rises from the Ashes

While there is still a long road to go for many victims of the Palisades and Alta Dena fires, we are grateful to begin to play a role in helping some residents get back to normal life. This home in the Rustic Canyon neighborhood of Santa Monica experienced extensive smoke damage from the Palisades fire, which burned just a few blocks away. After replacing most soft and porous materials and surfaces in the house, it was our turn to add some beauty and functionality.

The home has been exquisitely designed by the home owner, a former landscape architect with a very good eye for materials and balance. Her husband, a director, contributes his fair share of creative touches as well.

The elegantly designed Spanish style home was the perfect place to showcase our mill-direct sourced European-certified linens and other house-fabrics with an emphasis on natural materials. Our European lines carry an Oeko Tex-100 Certificaiton, are tested for hundreds of harmful substances, and are as clean and pure as linen fabrics can get. We are proud to be able to showcase these high quality fabrics in such a beautiful home.

Hardware selections were mostly wrought iron style, hand made in Los Angeles, except one ceiling mounted decorative traversing style rod that was better suited for a tricky set up for a blackout drapery in the primary bedroom.

Formal Dining: Dark woods, light walls, and Waterfall Style Roman Shades

The formal dining room features outside mounted waterfall style (flat front) roman shades in a European-certified line….color: Martini Olive. The sophisticated color of these roman shades played perfectly in this formal dining room. The outside mount above the windows provides drama and function - hiding a less-sightly view of the neighbors home and with an exaggerated height to clear the windows and make more of a visual impact. We hope many a martini are enjoyed along side this aptly-named linen color. Our unique sourcing of this high quality natural linen allows us to provide exceptional quality fabrics at very reasonable prices.

Office and Home Gym

In husband Matt’s office we went with a 100% natural, unbleached European linen with a 3/4” iron French return rod and rings. The soft natural color of the linen is subtle and calming and perfectly complimented the other finishings in the room. Simple, elegant and timeless hardware complimented the timelines lines of the lighting. The home gym is a calm, dark, moody tonal space and got an added element of drama with navy-on-navy drapery for privacy and light control.

The Primary Suite

The primary suite utilized additional natural, neutral, and natural-blend fabrics. The bathroom feels equal parts elevated Roman bath house, Italian Villa, and dream set up with classic and elegant finishes, rough yet elegant stone, and lots of natural light. In order to preserve privacy and create a canopy-like feel with a massive window, we added a top-down-bottom-up roman shade behind the dual pedestal style sinks and floating mirror. This allows for privacy as needed, but keeps the view open out onto mature trees and vegetation. The neutral colors of the fabrics softened up and complimented the natural yet rugged limestone really well. We love the client’s choice to use draperies in lieu of closet doors for their flowing form - an effect that further softens the space and seems to make it feel even larger.

In the primary bedroom, we swapped out one large roman shades for a drapery for better light blocking and a more dramatic effect. We also replaced a simple ceiling mounted track with a nicer decorative style h-rod with drop brackets to keep a little more consistency in hardware aesthetic. In true “field work” form, this video was short after most items were installed but still lack a few finishing touches and any styling whatsoever…so please keep that in mind.

A few odds and ends

While we weren’t able to shoot the entire home, below are a few more examples of some of the details and materials we loved. Maybe my favorite, a simple floral patterned accent shade in the primary bath / closet made on 100% natural linen. While we kept most spaces quiet and neutral, something a bit more fun just felt right here, and I think we nailed it.
